SMB1001 Certification, Without Switching Your IT Provider
What is SMB1001? SMB1001 is a cyber security standard built specifically for small and medium businesses. It's written by an organisation called Dynamic Standards International (DSI), and certification is administered through a platform called CyberCert. Unlike a lot of enterprise security frameworks, it's designed to be achievable for a business with a handful of staff, not just a company with its own security team.
SMB1001 has five tiers, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond, and you certify against one of them, not the whole standard at once. Bronze, Silver, and Gold are self-attested: a director of your company confirms, through the CyberCert portal, that the required controls are in place. Platinum and Diamond go further, an independent, accredited auditor has to verify your controls directly, not just take your word for it.
More and more Australian businesses are being asked for this by someone else: an insurer before they'll underwrite a cyber policy, a larger client before they'll put you on a supplier panel, a tender process that now lists a recognised security standard as a requirement.
SMB1001 certification is one part of Novaguard's broader cyber compliance work, if you're weighing this against Essential Eight or DISP, or aren't sure which standard actually applies to you, that's the place to start.
Who this page is for
If you're happy with your current IT provider, or you're just not ready to change that relationship, but you need or want SMB1001 certification, this page is for you. You don't have to move your whole IT environment to Novaguard to get certified. We can run the assessment, close the gaps, and manage the certification as a standalone engagement, working alongside whoever already looks after your systems.
If you are open to switching providers, skip ahead, there's a faster, cheaper way to get the same certification, further down this page.
What's included, the SMB1001 Gold Uplift
This is a newly built offer. We've designed it directly from the same certification process we run and maintain for our own managed clients, Gold is the standard every business on our Fortress or Iron Dome plan already carries, but as a standalone package, sold on its own, it's new. We're saying that plainly rather than implying a long track record we don't have yet.
The engagement is built around a roughly 14-day timeline and covers:
- Gap assessment, where your current environment sits against Gold-level SMB1001 controls, control by control.
- A fixed remediation plan, exactly what needs to change, in plain terms, before certification can be attested.
- Remediation support, we do the technical work needed to close the gaps found (or, where a control sits with your existing IT provider, we tell you exactly what to ask them for).
- Certification submission, attesting Gold-level controls through the CyberCert portal.
- Ongoing maintenance, SMB1001 isn't a one-time badge. Once you're certified, we keep the certification current on an annual basis, the same way we do for our own managed clients.
What it costs
From $1,850 for the Gold Uplift engagement described above. Your actual quote depends on how far your current environment is from Gold today; we'll confirm a fixed price after a short discovery call, before any work starts.
SMB1001 is published by Dynamic Standards International (DSI), with certification available through CyberCert. DSI’s SMB1001 Unlocked initiative, starting 1 January 2027, aims to make the standard freely accessible to small businesses. Our uplift fee covers the work to close gaps and prepare evidence. Confirm any certification or assessment charges separately for your chosen pathway.
Keep your SMB1001 controls under ongoing review
If you're not committed to your current IT provider, the work behind SMB1001 can be included in an ongoing managed relationship rather than purchased as an isolated project. Novaguard's managed IT services can include implementation, evidence maintenance, and reassessment support for the plan's stated SMB1001 target—Silver on Perimeter and Gold on Fortress and Iron Dome. Certification still depends on the applicable assessment and your organisation completing the required actions. If a provider switch is on the table, compare the managed-plan route before committing to a standalone project.
Keeping your internal IT team or current provider? Our managed cyber security service works alongside them. Bastion adds recurring checks of agreed controls, evidence reporting, and coordination of improvements against your scoped baseline, which can include SMB1001. Certification and any uplift work are agreed separately from those ongoing checks.
Beyond Gold, the path to Platinum and Diamond
Gold is the tier most insurers, tender panels, and larger clients treat as the credible baseline right now, for most businesses, it's the right target and nothing above it is necessary.
For businesses that specifically need to go further, heading toward ISO certification, or deliberately over-qualifying beyond Essential Eight for a specific client or regulatory reason, our Iron Dome managed clients already run the technical controls Platinum and Diamond require. What's missing by default isn't the technical work, it's the formal governance step: Platinum and Diamond aren't self-attested, they require an independent external auditor to verify your controls directly. We don't include that auditor engagement by default, because most businesses don't need it. When you do, we provide the full governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) checklist and evidence package your chosen external auditor will need to work from, that engagement is quoted separately based on scope.
Why this matters beyond the badge
A certificate is only useful if it holds up when someone actually checks it. When we help a client reach or maintain an SMB1001 tier, they get a full GRC export alongside it, the controls in scope, how each one is actually met, and the evidence behind it, mapped to their real environment. That's what you hand to a cyber insurance underwriter during an application (or a claim), or attach to a tender response, proof the controls are genuinely in place and maintained, not just a logo on a website.
For a concrete example, read how a five-person Queensland startup achieved SMB1001 Gold. The engagement established security controls and prepared evidence for insurer and prospective partner questions.
How it works
- Discovery call, a short conversation about your current setup and which tier makes sense for you.
- Gap assessment, control-by-control review against the target tier.
- Fixed-price remediation plan, confirmed before any work starts.
- Remediation, we close what's ours to close; you get clear instructions for anything that sits with your existing provider.
- Certification, attested through the CyberCert portal.
- Ongoing maintenance, annual review to keep your certification current as the standard and your environment both change.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to switch IT providers to get SMB1001 certified with Novaguard?
No. This engagement is built specifically for businesses that want to keep their current provider. We work alongside whoever manages your IT today.
How long does certification take?
The Gold Uplift is scoped around a 14-day engagement once we've confirmed your gap assessment, the exact timeline depends on how much remediation work is needed.
What's the difference between SMB1001 and Essential Eight?
SMB1001 is a certification, a public badge you can show a client, insurer, or tender panel that a third party has verified your controls. Essential Eight is a technical standard, a set of maturity-scored strategies you're assessed against, not a badge. SMB1001's Gold tier and Essential Eight overlap heavily on the technical controls each expects, so most of the work toward one carries over to the other, but they solve different problems: SMB1001 is what you show people, Essential Eight is what a tender, insurer, or Defence contract specifically asks for by name. See our Essential Eight Compliance page for the full detail.
What happens after I'm certified?
SMB1001 isn't a one-time badge, the standard is reviewed and updated, and certification needs to stay current. We maintain it on an ongoing annual basis as part of this engagement.
Is Gold enough, or do I need Platinum?
For most SMBs, Gold is the right target, it's what insurers, tender panels, and larger clients are actually asking for. Platinum and Diamond make sense in specific cases, see "Beyond Gold" above; we'll tell you honestly if you don't need them.
