Case Studies
Real engagements, anonymised. We don't publish client names. What's here is the industry, the size, the problem, what we actually did, and what changed. Novaguard is based in Brisbane and supports organisations Australia-wide. Each study describes the scope and outcome of a specific engagement.
Managed IT
Taking over, and getting it documented
Managed IT Handover for a 10–12-Person Gold Coast Business
Novaguard took over IT support for a Gold Coast motor vehicle trade business with 10–12 staff as its long-standing contractor approached retirement. We coordinated the handover, documented the environment, and addressed recurring faults while retaining its on-premises server and Microsoft 365 setup.
Google Drive to Microsoft 365 for an Infrastructure Project Management Consultancy
Novaguard moved an infrastructure project management consultancy from a self-managed Google Drive setup to Microsoft 365. We established central identities, structured SharePoint access, and managed devices, enabling collaboration with its government clients within their Microsoft environment.
Both of these started as managed IT services.
Cyber security
Identity, done properly
Passwordless Sign-In and Shared Account Control for a Brisbane Firm
Novaguard introduced passwordless primary sign-in for a Brisbane professional services firm with more than 20 staff. Shared vendor and social-account credentials were moved into a company password manager, supported by staff training and management ownership of adoption.
MFA and Offboarding Gaps Resolved at a 20-Person Accounting Firm
Novaguard’s onboarding audit of a 20-person Queensland accounting firm identified MFA exemptions and a former employee’s active accounting-software account. We removed the exemptions, revoked outdated access, and consolidated application identities where supported. No breach or insurance claim occurred.
Both sit under managed cyber security.
Compliance & certification
Security requirements and certification
SMB1001 Gold Certification for a Five-Person Queensland Startup
Novaguard helped a five-person Queensland startup establish security controls and achieve SMB1001 Gold certification. The engagement responded to requests from an insurer and a prospective business partner for evidence of the organisation’s security practices.
Essential Eight Level 2 in One Microsoft Tenant for Defence-Related Work
Novaguard built a scoped Essential Eight Maturity Level 2 environment for a consulting firm with Defence employee-placement requirements. Device controls and restricted project access separated the relevant work within its existing Microsoft tenant. The client’s evidence was submitted to Defence.
Both are cyber compliance engagements: Essential Eight compliance and SMB1001 certification.

"We recently partnered with Michael to transition our organisation to Microsoft 365, and the experience was nothing short of exceptional. From the initial consultation to post-migration support, Michael demonstrated deep expertise, clear communication, and a genuine commitment to our success. As a small business knowing Novaguard are in our back corner gives us peace of mind. Highly recommend!"
Choosing the right IT support for your organisation
Which case study is most relevant to our organisation?
Start with the decision you are facing. The Gold Coast handover study covers changing an IT provider while retaining existing systems. The Microsoft 365 migration covers project collaboration and contractor access. The identity studies examine password practices, MFA coverage, and departed-user access. The compliance and infrastructure studies show more specialised scopes. Compare the starting problem and working environment, as well as the client’s size.
How do these examples relate to a team with 10–30 staff?
Our managed IT service is built around organisations with 10–30 staff, and several of these engagements involve teams in that range. The collection also includes a five-person startup and larger environments because project scope varies. A smaller team may need defined certification work, while a larger organisation may need help with one part of its infrastructure. The first discussion establishes the responsibility you want us to take on.
Where were these projects delivered, and can you support us outside Brisbane?
Novaguard is based in Brisbane and provides remote support Australia-wide. Each study identifies the client’s region where that detail is published, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and Queensland. Those project locations are separate from our broader service coverage. If your engagement requires onsite work, discuss the locations and practical arrangements with us when defining the scope.
What evidence do the case studies provide?
These are anonymised accounts of Novaguard engagements. They describe the starting environment, work performed, and reported outcome. The results sections distinguish deployed controls, operational observations, certification, and evidence submission where relevant. A result from one engagement helps explain our approach, but your own scope and service commitments need to be agreed separately. Client identities and unpublished operational records are not disclosed here.
Should we start with managed IT, a review, or a project?
Managed IT suits an organisation looking for ongoing ownership of support, maintenance, and security within an agreed plan. A Technology Business Review or Cyber Business Review can help establish the current position before a larger decision. A scoped project suits a defined change, such as a migration or infrastructure build. Tell us the problem and the responsibility you need covered; we can discuss which starting point fits.
What should we bring to an initial conversation?
Your approximate staff count, key applications, working locations, and the main issue you want to resolve are enough to begin. Mention any upcoming provider change, contract requirement, or deadline. You do not need to prepare a technical specification or send passwords through the contact form. We will discuss the access and discovery needed for the next step, including any proposed assessment scope and cost.
Want the same outcome?
Most of these started the same way: a conversation about what the business was trying to do, before anyone looked at a single piece of technology.
